The World’s Best Player, Alexia Putellas, missed from the spot when Barcelona faced Sporting Huelva in Liga F earlier today. Barcelona Femeni grabbed a victory over Sporting Huelva away from home on matchday 2 in Liga F. The Catalan team dominated the game from start to finish and were unlucky to have finished the game with just two goals.
Bruna Vilamala teed up Claudia Pina in the first half to give the champions the lead. A display of brilliance down the right flank between Graham Hansen and Vicky Lopez started the move that brought about Barcelona’s first goal. The teenager also got involved in a few goalmouth actions and even forced a save out of Chelsea Ashurst in Sporting Huelva’s goal, but was unable to find the back of the net.
The Blaugrana introduced the trio of Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putellas, and Mariona Caldentey into the game in the 65th minute. The trio were not included in the starting lineup as the head coach decided to rest the players after representing Spain during the international break.
Barcelona kept pushing for a second but failed to score until they were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute after Esmee Brugts was fouled in the penalty area. Club skipper Alexia Putellas stepped up to take the penalty and shockingly missed from the spot. The Ballon d’Or winner saw her penalty saved by Chelsea Ashurst, Sporting Huelva’s goalkeeper.
However, Barcelona would not be denied the victory they truly deserve after the dominance they’ve shown all through the game. Patri Guijarro turned home Aitana Bonmati’s cross in the 92nd minute to secure Barcelona’s victory.
Although Carrasco did score for Sporting Huelva with the last kick of the game, it was nothing more than a consolation goal.
Barcelona will continue their league title defense when they face Valencia at home on October 5th in what promises to be an entertaining match.
