Liga F returned to action with Barcelona hosting Eibar on Matchday 11. A growing list of injuries saw Barcelona head into the game without the services of some key players and have to field a heavily rotated squad on the players’ return from international duty.
Regardless of the injury woes that plague the team, the Blaugrana were able to secure a 5-0 victory over their counterparts, continuing their winning run and maintaining their lead at the top of the table. Goals from Caroline Graham Hansen, Ari Arias, and a hattrick from Esmee Brugts helped the Catalan side to their 11th win in the league this season.
First Half
Barcelona Femeni started the game with their usual dominance, totally claiming possession of the ball for majority of the half. However, lack of connection in the final third and proper defending from the Eibar defence saw the half end in a goalless stalemate.
Claudia Pina almost put Barcelona ahead in the 9th minute of the game but missed the target. The young forward hit the crossbar again with a beautiful strike from outside the box in the 16th minute.
Aitana Bonmati forced a save from the goalkeeper in the 19th minute with a left-footed strike from the edge of the box. The world’s best player also came close to scoring in the 43rd minute but saw her shot whizz over the bar.
The half went by goalless and both teams went into the tunnel on equal grounds at the end of the halftime.
Second Half
After a couple of failed attempts in the first half, Barcelona started the second half aiming to score goals and secure all three points.
Mariona Caldentey missed a chance to send the team ahead shortly after the restart. The forward saw her shot sail slightly off target following a scramble in the box.
Esmee Brugts also struck the post in the 53rd minute as Barcelona kept searching for an opener.
However, in the 57th minute, Caroline Graham Hansen took matter into her own hands and fired a left-footed shot that kissed the underneath of the crossbar on its way to the back of the net. Once again, the Norwegian forward broke the deadlock for Barcelona in a game where the team were finding it difficult to score.
The Norwegian’s goal opened the flood gates as Barcelona went 4-0 up in the space of ten minutes, with Esmee Brugts scoring a hattrick in eight minutes to open her goalscoring account for the Blaugrana.
Her first goal came in the 58th minute after a brilliant exchange of passes between Caroline Graham Hansen and Aitana Bonmati led to the former bursting into the box and passing the ball back in play to Esmee Brugts who finished with a beautifully executed back heel to score her debut goal for Barcelona.
Three minutes later, the Dutch followed Mariona Caldentey’s incisive run into the box and only had to tap in the Spanish forward’s pass to get her second goal of the night.
In similar fashion to her second goal, Brugts completed her hattrick tapping the ball home at the near post following Luis Corrales’s delivery in the 66th minute.
Like clockwork, Esmee Brugts who had yet to register a goal since joining Barcelona in the summer scored a hattrick on goal debut for the club.
Barcelona made it five with two minutes left to play when substitute Ari Arias finished right in front of goal after being assisted by Lucy Bronze. Vicky Lopez found the English full-back with a lofted pass over the backline before the latter laid the ball into the path of Ari Arias who scored her first goal of the season.
The game ended with a 5-0 victory for Barcelona, extending their winning run in the league to 11 games. Barcelona Femeni’s nex game is a group stage clash with FC Rosengard in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on December 13.
