Like tradition, every football club across the globe enjoys a moment popularly referred to as the transfer window. It is a period where teams engage in trading players on the transfer market. Clubs bring in players that will help them achieve their objectives for the coming season, and sell or loan players that are surplus to demand, or heavily sought after by other clubs.

Barcelona brought some players to the club at the start of the 2022/2023 season.  Some of the players were old faces recalled from their loan spells at other clubs, and some were new faces brought in from other clubs across Europe. Among the signings was a young Spanish sensation with a background in football and athletics, Salma Paralluelo. The teenager was signed on a free transfer from Villareal and announced as a Barcelona player on July 11, 2023.

A young forward with enough versatility to play in any position in the front line, with the strength, stamina, and pace to beat opposition defenders, as well as a strong left foot that delivers powerful strikes. Considering her qualities, it could be said that Barcelona struck gold with the teenager.

Salma was unavailable for selection at the start of the season, as she was away on international duty, where she represented Spain’s U20 Women’s team in the World Cup in 2022. The Spanish team went on to win the trophy after defeating Japan 3-1 in the final. Barcelona’s new sensation scored 2 goals in that game that secured the title for the Spanish national team.

On her return to action in club football, Salma scored her first goal for Barcelona on her second appearance on Nov 3, 2022. The forward played all 90 minutes in the game against Las Planas where she scored one goal and contributed 2 assists. The goal was a promise of things to come from the youngster. Paralluelo eventually finished the 2022/2023 Liga F campaign with 11 goals then went on to score against other clubs. The clubs she scored against include Deportivo Alaves, Atletico Madrid, Alhama, Sevilla, Villareal, Valencia, and Athletic Bilbao.

In her first season as a Barcelona player, the Zaragoza-born forward made an appearance and scored in all competitions. She scored in Liga F, the Copa de la Reina, the SuperCopa de Espana, and the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

We take a look at the performance of Salma Paralluelo in the recently concluded 2022/2023 season, both in the Liga F and the UEFA Women’s Champions League:

Salma Paralluelo in the Liga F

With 18 appearances and 9 starts, Salma Paralluelo scored 11 goals and contributed 4 assists in her first season for Barcelona. She played a total of 974 minutes, averaging 1.01 goals per 90 minutes played. She had 24 shots on target out of 43 shots attempted, with a pass completion rate of 75.5%.

Mostly deployed as a winger, she delivered 38 crosses into the opposition’s penalty area, won 2 fouls that led to a penalty, and had a 47.4% successful take-on rate. However, playing on the wings requires assisting the fullbacks defensively when the team is not in possession of the ball. The Spanish forward contributed defensively by winning 11 tackles, 4 aerial duels, 2 interceptions, and 49 ball recoveries throughout the season.

Salma Paralluelo in the UWCL

She made 9 appearances in the UWCL, starting in 5 games, and playing a combined total of 498 minutes. With a goal and an assist to her name in the competition, Salma made 9 key passes, with a pass completion rate of 82%, and delivered 10 crosses into the opposition’s penalty area.

Defensively, she made 3 interceptions to stop the opposition attack, won 8 tackles, and won 4 of 8 aerial duels contested.

Key Moment of the Season

Salma’s first season at Barcelona is filled with special moments, enough to make a reel of amazing memories in the long run. She scored a sensational free-kick in Liga F, scored against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semifinal, scored 2 goals, and assisted 1 in the 9-0 rout of Osasuna in the Copa del Rey. And most importantly she won 3 trophies, the Super Copa de Espana, the Liga F, and the UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy in her first season as a Barcelona player; with the UWCL title being the cream of the crop.

However, one key moment that would be fondly remembered, is her sensational goal against Roma in the first leg of the quarterfinal in the UWCL. Salma scored in the first half of that encounter in Rome, a beautiful strike from the edge of the penalty box that found the bottom corner of the net. Barcelona won 1-0 on the night, and Salma’s goal happened to be the difference, and it put Barcelona ahead on aggregate going into the second leg.

Salma Paralluelo’s defensive performance in the 2022/2023 season

Without a doubt, Salma Paralluelo has proven to be an important signing for Barcelona this season, and her performances were good enough for her to earn a call-up to the squad representing the Spanish national team in the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup. We look forward to seeing the forward make more appearances in the coming season.

Her recent call-up to the Spanish national team implies that the young forward now has a chance at getting a World Cup winner’s medal, less than a year after winning the U20 Women’s World Cup. We wish her the best of luck as she represents the Spanish national team during the break.
