In the round of 16, Spain breezed past Switzerland 5-1 to progress to their first-ever quarterfinal in the Women’s World Cup, a feat never before achieved by the team. However, the quarterfinal was not going to be the end of their historic run, as they defeated the Netherlands in extra time, securing a 2-1 victory to advance to the semifinals.
The semifinals put them up against seasoned semifinalists, Sweden, who have been at that stage three times before. However, La Roja survived again defeating Sweden 2-1 to progress to the final of the World Cup.
Facing the hurdle of the Lionesses of England in the final, Spain took revenge on their eliminators in the European championship last summer, defeating them by a single goal and ending up as the winners of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
