Aitana Bonmati double sends Spain to World Cup quarterfinals

In a game where Spain delivered arguably their best performance of the tournament, Spanish midfielder and Barcelona sensation, Aitana Bonmati was at the heart of the team’s victory. La Roja defeated Switzerland 5-1, securing their spot in the quarterfinals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, courtesy of goals from Aitana Bonmati (2), Alba Redondo, Laia Codina, and Jennifer Hermoso. Aitana Bonmati scored the first goal of the game in the 5th minute after displaying amazing footwork in the box to put the ball past Switzerland’s goalkeeper, after being teed up by Alba Redondo. In the 17th minute, roles were switched as Aitana assisted Alba Redondo in getting Spain’s second goal. Bonmati then went ahead to score a second goal herself in the 36th minute, showing enough calm and composure in the box to sit three defenders on the grass before calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net.

Aitana then set up a goal for Jennifer Hermoso in the 70th minute before being replaced in the 77th minute. The midfielder was given the Player of the Match award, which she duly deserved following the stellar performance she put up against Switzerland.

Spain’s victory sends them to the quarterfinals of the tournament, where they will have to face the winner of another round of 16 clash between The Netherlands and South Africa on August 11.
