Spain defeated England 1-0 in the final of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup played in Sydney, Australia, earlier today. The win saw Spain crowned the new World Champions for the first time in their history.

Following Spain’s historic World Cup win, FC Barcelona Femeni midfielder Aitana Bonmati was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player during the awards ceremony. The Spanish midfielder received the award for her excellent performance throughout the World Cup, in which she contributed 3 goals and 2 assists to Spain’s victorious run.

Bonmati started all of Spain’s matches in the World Cup, including the final, where she played the full duration of the game as she watched her country defeat England by a single goal.

Her performance comes off the back of an amazing season in club football that saw her named the UEFA Women’s Champions League Player of the Tournament. The 25-year-old showed up for Barcelona and took on the leadership role in the midfield in the absence of club captain Alexia Putellas, who spent almost 10 months on the sidelines due to an ACL injury.

With collective team trophies secured both domestically, in Europe, and on the global stage, Aitana Bonmati’s performance in all competitions might just be enough to win her the individual awards coveted by every footballer, the Ballon d’Or and FIFA The Best awards for the year.
