Aitana Bonmati scores twice in Spain’s 5-0 demolition of Switzerland

Aitana Bonmati celebrates scoring for Spain

The UEFA Women’s Nations League continued yesterday, and World Champions Spain faced off against Switzerland. The match was an interesting matchup, as once again it was a clash that had once occurred in the recently concluded FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In their first match at home since winning the World Cup, Spain displayed a performance worthy of champions as they demolished Switzerland 5-0, a similar scoreline to their round-of-16 clash at the World Cup, where Spain won by a 5-1 scoreline. However, not only were the scorelines of both games similar, but even the goalscorers were similar to some extent.

Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati scored twice in the World Cup clash between both nations and repeated the feat yesterday by scoring two goals against the Swiss. The midfielder scored her first goal of the game before the end of the first half and bagged her second four minutes into the second half.

Barcelona Femeni players Mariona Caldentey and club captain Alexia Putellas recorded three assists in total in the game. Caldentey made the assist for the first goal of the game before teaming up with teammate Aitana Bonmati for Spain’s second goal.

In similar fashion, Alexia Putellas was in sync with Aitana Bonmati to help assist the Ballon d’Or favorite to her second of the game.

Spain’s other goals were scored courtesy of Lucia Garcia, Inma Gabarro, and Maite Oroz.

Spain will return to action on October 27 to continue their UEFA Nations League run against Italy. Meanwhile, club football will return this weekend, and Barcelona will play its second league game of the season away at Sporting Huelva on October 1.
