In their first match since their World Cup win in Australia, Spain faced Sweden in the UEFA Nations League. Spain won the game by a 3-2 scoreline, courtesy of goals from Athenea del Castillo, Eva Navarro, and Mariona Caldentey.
The Spanish national team, which had been struggling with off-the-field issues before and after their World Cup win, had a change in leadership before their match against Sweden. With Irene Paredes and two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas claiming the captain’s armband.
The team had their maiden World Cup win overshadowed by the nonconsensual kiss shared between Luis Rubiales and Jennifer Hermoso at the World Cup, and since then the players have refused to represent the national team until they see changes in leadership and better treatment of the players.
Spain will be in action again when they face Switzerland on Tuesday, October 26, in another UEFA Nations League game.
