Earlier today the semifinal fixtures of the Copa de La Reina was discovered in a draw featuring four Liga F teams. The fate of Barcelona Femeni, Atletico de Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Athletic Club in the domestic competition’s semifinal was decided.
Barca Femeni were drawn against Athletic Club in a two-legged semifinal affair set to take place on March 7 and 14. Barcelona will be playing away from home in the first leg before returning to the Estadi Johan Cruyff a week later for the return fixture. The other semifinal clash will be between Atletico de Madrid and Real Sociedad, and the winners of both fixtures will compete for the trophy in the final.
Barcelona were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player in the last edition of the competition and thus, lost their hold on the title to Atletico de Madrid. However, with the Blaugrana already in the penultimate stage of tournament, the Catalan giants are only two wins away from reclaiming the title.
Barca defeated Fundacio Albacete 6-0 in the round of 16 before breezing past Sevilla in a 8-0 victory in the quarterfinals to secure their spot in the semifinals. While Barcelona Femeni are deemed favorites to win the Copa de La Reina this season, there is still much work to do for Spanish champions with Athletic Club being the next obstacle they must overcome on their way to the final.
Defeating Athletic Club will set Barcelona on the path to their second title this season after lifting the Spanish Supercup trophy in January.
