FIFAWWC: Barcelona Femeni players in the round of 16

At the start of the competition, FC Barcelona Femeni had 18 players in the tournament. Requesting their various countries at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, these players face off against each other for the ultimate prize in Women’s football, the World Cup.

After three rounds of the group stage, the tournament progressed. Some nations have been eliminated, while others have secured their progression into the round of 16.

This process of elimination has affected two of the 18 Barcelona players who started the tournament.

With Brazil and Italy among the teams eliminated at the group stage, Barcelona’s Brazilian forward Geyse Ferreira and Italian youngster, Guilia Dragoni have been knocked out of the World Cup. Leaving Barcelona with 16 players heading into the round of 16. 

As the tournament progresses, the number of Barcelona players left will continue to decrease. But in the meantime, we bring you the round of 16 fixtures featuring Barcelona Femeni players.

Japan vs Norway

After finishing in second place in Group A at the end of the group stage matches, Norway, represented by Barcelona stars Ingrid Engen and Caroline Graham Hansen, will face the winners of Group C, Japan.

The first round of 16 matchups would take place on August 5.

Switzerland vs Spain

Group A winners, Switzerland would play against Group C’s runner-up for a chance to progress to the quarterfinals of the competition.

Barcelona’s Ana Maria Crnogorcevic will be up against nine of her Barcelona teammates who will be representing Spain in the game. Irene Paredes, Ona Batlle, Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putellas, Mariona Caldentey, and Salma Paralluelo, having already represented Spain in the group stage, would all be available for selection against Switzerland. Yet to represent the Spanish national team in the World Cup are Cata Coll, Laia Codina, and Maria Perez. 

The round of 16 games would take place on August 5.

Sweden vs USA

Fridolina Rolfo and the Sweden national team will be playing against the defending champions and serial World Cup winners, the US Women’s National Team.

Qualifying for the knockout stage as Group G leaders, Sweden has the heavy task of facing Group E runner-up, the USWNT, for a chance to progress to the quarterfinals.

The round of 16 games would take place on August 6.

England vs Nigeria

Like the Switzerland versus Spain saga, this clash pits three Barcelona Femeni players against each other.

On the English side are Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh, who, having secured the round of 16 as winners of Group D, would have to play against teammate Oshoala and the Nigeria national team, runner-up of Group B.

The round of 16 games would take place on August 7.

Other rounds of 16 clashes include:

  • Netherlands vs South Africa
  • Australia vs Denmark
  • Colombia vs Jamaica
  • France vs Morocco

There is no Barcelona player representing any of the sides in the other round of 16 clashes.
