For a while now, the departure of Barcelona Femeni head coach Jonatan Giraldez has been making the headlines in the world of female football, with suggestions of a move to the NWSL constantly churning the rumor mill. The coach’s move was eventually confirmed yesterday after the NWSL side, the Washington Spirits, announced Giraldez as their new head coach.

Although the Spanish manager will not be joining until mid-June after the end of the Liga F season, Giraldez is expected to hit the ground running in his new role with the Spirits. At 32 years of age, Jonatan Giraldez is set to be the youngest coach in the league and his achievements with Barcelona Femeni put him on the radar with the NWSL side.

Giraldez won 1 Copa de le Reina, 2 Supercopas de Espana, 2 Liga F titles, and 1 UEFA Women’s Champions League title with Barcelona Femeni. The coach is expected to bring huge success to the American side with a change in their style of play and ensure a consistent winning streak.

Washington Spirit recently fired manager Mark Parsons following the coach’s failure to help the team qualify for the playoffs. Giraldez steps into a hig-pressure role heading into Audi Field with huge expectations following his success with Barcelona Femeni.
